Makeup: Coloured Eyeliner

Hi again! How has your week been? I can't wait for my semester break - just 2 days away. I'm so ready to get away from textbooks, lecturers and the college itself, ready to trade them in with new novels I just got and a whole week of lazying around + family time.

Like last week's post, it was all about the lips. This week's post - colored eyeliner. If you're someone who's into nude makeup (neutral eye makeup, even complexion, nude blush and a soft pink lip) and want to inject a pop of colour into your makeup look once in awhile, you could try altering your eye makeup and add a line of coloured eyeliner.

It's fun and flirty. People don't usually realise it  - because it's not as if you're covering your whole eyelid with eyeshadow - until you start batting your lashes and your eyes catches the light, trust me, it'll look nice. You'll look...different. People notice that.

I've seen white eyeliner on models on the runway. It looks modern and refreshing. You could also try orange or coral or a bright turquoise. If you're not into that, you could opt for dark colours (except black) like an aubergine purple, a navy blue or forest green. If you want something you can wear for clubbing or a night out with the girls, choose something sparkly. Silver looks good against pale skin tones and gold for the olive-/tanned-/darker- skin tone.

It's all up to you, really. Just have fun and experiment until you settle on one that you're comfortable with :-)

Now comes the daunting part. If you're not used to coloured eyeliner but work fine with normal black eyeliner, how do you make coloured eyeliner, especially, look good? The truth is: it works like how a black eyeliner does. You apply the same way you usually do.

I do have a few tips for those who aren't blessed with beautifully sculpted deep set eyes. You'd apply it but once you open your eyes, it just looks lost somewhere, disappearing right into your eyelids. I totally feel you. Girls, you can still make it work. No giving up when it comes to makeup.

  1.  Try finding your crease and lightly blend in a colour one shade darker than your skin tone to create the illusion of being born with an obvious brow bone.
  2. Now, if that doesn't work out and you personally think your lids don't have that kind of space to have a crease, it's a-okay.
  3. Just jump right in. Line your eyes with a super thin line of your favourite black eyeliner. I chose to use a liquid pen eyeliner with a very fine tip to get a precise line. Don't forget to slightly wing it out.
  4. Then, comes the fun part: the coloured liner. Line it on top of your black liner. If you have heavy double lids, (A) start lining from the middle of your lids and then take it outwards, avoiding the inner corners altogether.
  5. If you want a different take on things, leave the black eyeliner on but line your bottom lid instead. Repeat step (A).
  6. You could use a gel eyeliner for maximum opaqueness or a liquid one. I've been into pencil liners lately, but they're a bit tricky to get a lot colour from because layering too much leads to the worst thing that can happen - smudging.
  7. Which brings us to one major important thing to remind ourselves. If you live in a warm and humid place, you'll completely understand that you'll sweat sooner or later into the day. And if you naturally have oily eyelids (like I do), you'll find it a pain to have anything coloured on your eyes because it'll either smudge or start creasing. So, when choosing an eyeliner, reminder: make make make sure it's WATERPROOF.
  8. But if you can't help it even with a primer (I mean, all of us oily-skinned gals can't) and you find that anything waterproof does not help at all, here's another trick: after laying down a line of the colored eyeliner, set it lightly with your favourite translucent powder. Then, layer another thin line on top. I can't promise it'll stay there forever but it will definitely prolong staying power to a few more extra hours.
Just 8 steps and extremely basic ones. I don't believe in spending so much time to make one thing look so perfect. You know I'm into quick and easy looks that leave you looking polished and pretty, so I think this is perfect for college days and daytime where you're just not ready to go all smokey eye.

Cheers,
M x
