Friday Film: Death Proof

Jungle Julia: [to Arlene] What about "kinda cute, kinda hot, kinda sexy, hysterically funny, but not funny-looking guy who you could fuck" did you not understand?

Stuntman Mike: [handing Arlene and Jungle Julia beers] Cheers, Butterfly. The woods are lovely, dark, and deep. And I have promises to keep. Miles to go before I sleep. Did you hear me, Butterfly? Miles to go, before you sleep.

Lee: Did you know Kim carried a gun?
Abernathy: Yes. Now, do I approve? No. Do I know? Yes?
Kim: Look, I don't know what futuristic utopia you live in, but the world I live in, a bitch need a gun.
Abernathy: You can't get around the fact that people who carry guns, tend to get shot more than people who don't.
Kim: And you can't get around the fact that if I go down to the laundry room in my building at midnight enough times, I might get my ass raped.
Lee: Don't do your laundry at midnight.
Kim: Fuck that! I wanna do my laundry whenever the fuck I wanna do my laundry.
Abernathy: There are other things you can carry other than a gun. Pepper spray.
Kim: Uh, motherfucker tryna rape me? I don't wanna give him skin rash! I wanna shut that nigga down!
Abernathy: How about a knife at least?
Kim: Yeah, you know what happens to motherfuckers carry knives? They get shot! Look, if I ever become a famous actress, I wont carry a gun. I'll hire me a do-dirt nigga, and he'll carry the gun. And when shit goes down, I'll sit back and laugh, but until that day, it's Wild West motherfucker!

I watched this on a particularly slow day during Chinese New Year and I was hooked from the very beginning till the very end. Girl power is a strong theme of the movie, which is what we need from Quentin Tarantino at times. The aesthetic of the film is interesting as well. At one point, it turned completely black and white. The screenshots may give certain key scenes away but come on, you need to watch everything to know for sure what happens.

Death Proof is a perfect portrayal of how rape culture can be as well. It shows how sleazy guys can terrorise girls and make them feel extremely uncomfortable. The ending made me stand up and applaud.

Girls, treat yourself to some girl power feels with this movie and do check out the credit song Chick Habit by April March. There are two versions of Chick Habit, a French version as well as an English version. Both are equally great, especially when you're getting ready for a night out or hanging out with your girlfriends.

Till then,
Hang up the chick habit.

Photo Diary: Penang I

Day 1 started out with an early trip to the airport. After a mere 30 minute airplane ride, we arrived in Penang. The entire day was spent scouting for food, walking around the entire Georgetown without the help of a map, relying solely on Waze and Google Maps and having exhaustion kick in when we were miles away from our hostel. I am not exaggerating when I say we walked the entire Georgetown and then some. In search of ABC, we made our way to Padang Kota Lama only to be declined that privilege and having to settle with coconut shakes, which was somewhat satisfying.

Fort Cornwallis was next on the nonexistent itinerary. It was RM2, so Marini and I paid, whereas the boys decided to sit it out. My memory is a tad bit hazy because the entire day was a blur. Based on the photographs, we went to the camera museum, the jetty and Hin Bus Art Depot. All of which are pretty far away in terms of walking distance, but fun nonetheless.

We ended our day by running in the rain for roadside burgers and a few rounds of charades with the help of an iPhone app. More pictures from day 1 will be up soon.

Till then,
When was the last time you had ABC?

Out of Whack

H&M hat, high waist shorts & boots, Choker from KK, Thrifted top & cover up,
Forever 21 bag.

You can never ever go wrong with brunch. Brunch is the best type of meal there is.

The. Absolute. Best.

And the best place to have it, in my opinion, is Antipodean, Bangsar. We sat outside because Cali vibes, you feel? Also, the weather was decent enough that we thought hey, why not. XinJun and I had their All Day Breakfast, because anytime of the day is a fantastic time for breakfast. No really, it is. Tasha had their banana pancakes. Pancakes heal all, you hear me?

What I absolutely love about Antipodean is that they serve good food and they serve it fast. I was on the verge of being hangry and it was crucial that they served as fast as possible or I would have thrown a BF (bitch fit), especially over the smallest things, i.e. the sun rays hitting me in the eye.

So yes guys, good brunch spot alert.

Till then,
Go have brunch you crazy kids.

Up To Speed

Total freedom is how I would describe my days right now. No more worrying about getting the best parking spots or dreading waking up before the sun rises. These days I get to focus on things I love to do, that is eating, binge watching television series (Broad City is the bomb guys. Watch it. Live it. Love it), thrifting and working with Third Culture.

With that said, I should really start posting here more often because consistency and memories. Huge emphasis on memories, especially for lonely nights in the States.

Third Culture has been keeping me busy with posts and buys, which is great because I love what I do. No, they did not pay me to say this. We actually got to visit some bundle places tonight, although they were on the highest degree of shady, we managed to score some pretty decent stuff. Do not risk your lives going there folks, it's not worth it. Also, Jade and Shaq the best bosses ever. Who else would buy you drinks in the hopes that you'll get mildly drunk as well as accept your accusations of them being a shopaholic? Not your bosses, I bet. Thanks to Jade, I'm starting to branch out with the writing style and content. She even made a content schedule for my blog, which proves how great of a person she is.

Lots of good vibes tonight as you can tell. Thanks to Ra, ZoƩ, On and tom yam soup. Oh, fried sotong too. So yes, more posts. More good vibes. More whatever the hell I wanna write about.

Cheers,
YP.

Lists

Highlights of May:
1) The end of Inti with 4th semester finals out of the way.
2) Ipoh day trip with the girls.
3) Exploring Penanag and Langkawi with the crew.
4) Riding it through with the lumps around KK and Kuching.
5) Sleepover with the girls (& On) you can never, ever sit with.

Things I've learnt (because life is one huge Hallmark moment):
1) Communication is everything.
2) Take a step back when life seems hazy.
3) Problems can be easily solved when viewed from a different perspective, especially a wider one.
4) Some issues are smaller than we tend to perceive.

My mind can't seem to form proper words without me wanting to throw my laptop off the bed as I cry out in frustration. Words can't seem to fully describe how I feel at the moment or what I'm trying to say, but hopefully these lists will do for now.

Till then,
Constantly growing.
